The Value of Art!

Why is art important to a young child?

Art education helps a young child to develop in many ways of life and education. Art enhances the developing fine motor skills in your child, such as holding a paintbrush or simply squeezing a bottle of glue. Art enhances the use of problem solving skills and critical thinking skills in your child. Art also is an avenue for your child to express their creativity and imagination and be exposed to various materials in which that vision can be seen.

Art is a creative arena for much learning to take place beyond crayons and markers. The art program here at East provides your child with the ability to learn multiple skills that will help your child in other areas in their education.

What is Everyone Learning about in Art

Kindergarten is learning about the author and illustrator Eric Carle. They are working on a colorful turkey for the fall and also working on ducks in a pond.

1st Grade is learning about Eric Carle's book Papa, please get the moon for me, and making a painted paper project to go along with the story.

2nd Grade is finishing up on a Haunted House they began in October. Their next project will be using shapes to create a Robot-like self portrait.

3rd Grade is finishing up on a Van Gogh style fall picture where they used oil pastels, water colors and construction paper. Their next project will be a Clay House!

4th Grade is working really hard at learning the art of printmaking. They have created some modes of transportation printing plates that they are printing onto maps. A lot of work still needs to be done to complete the final project.

5th Grade is finishing up their Aspen Tree project. In this project the student learned about shading and shadows in a forest. Their used their oil pastel blending skills as well as their watercolro skills. Their next project will be learning how to draw the human figure in the form of gesture drawing. They will then create a stained glass inspired piece of artwork.
